The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Malta Civil Aviation Directorate have both awarded operating licenses to Wizz Air Malta, a subsidiary of the Hungarian ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air (CAD).

Robert Carey, president of Wizz Air, claims that the formally opening of the new branch complements the parent company’s multi-AOC strategy and will improve the airline’s standing in Malta and around Europe.

Wizz Air aims to purchase 75 A321neos and has a 500-plane fleet goal by 2030.
In order to increase its fleet to 500 aircraft by 2030, Wizz Air intends to buy 75 Airbus A321neo aircraft.

“From now on Wizz Air Malta will be subject to EASA’s continuous oversight, as it is already the case of its sister/mother company Wizz Air Hungary. This ensures that the entire EU operations of the Wizz Air group meet the EU’s safety requirements, which are among the most stringent in the world,” EASA flight standards director Jesper Rasmussen was quoted as saying in a Wizz Air statement.

On September 27, 2022, the brand-new Malta-based airline made its inaugural flight out of Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO).

“The establishment of Wizz Air Malta will allow the group to further diversify its operations, providing enhanced flexibility and the potential for significant expansion,” the airline’s statement reads.

Wizz Air now runs a number of AOCs, including Wizz Air UK, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and Wizz Air Hungary as of September 2022. The airline’s fleet consists of 166 Airbus A320 and A321 passenger aircraft.
