United launched its nonstop services between Washington (IAD) and Cape Town on November 17. With this new service, the carrier will now offer a third route between the US and SA.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight UA 2222, with the tail number N24979, departed from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) at 19:19 local time and touched down at Cape Town Airport (CPT) at 15:31 local time the following day, after a 13-hour, 32-minute flight.

The only airline that provides non-stop service between the American capital and South Africa is United.

To its second major transatlantic hub in Washington – Dulles, passengers flying out of Cape Town will have the option to connect through more than 60 of the carrier’s Americas destinations (IAD).

“As a country, we thank our United Airlines partners for their continued support and welcome this direct flight. We invite U.S. travelers to visit Cape Town and then explore other parts of South Africa, as we have so much to offer in our nine provinces,” said Nomasonto Ndlovu, chief operating officer of South African Tourism.

The addition of United’s new transatlantic service to South Africa will supplement its existing services from Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT), which was upgraded from a seasonal service to an all-year-round operation.

In December, the Chicago-based airline will offer 6,682 weekly seats between the United States and South Africa, according to Cirium. With a 52% market share in terms of seats per seat kilometers offered (ASK), United will be the dominant operator in this segment.
