The official airline of Morocco, Royal Air Maroc, announced on Wednesday that all of its scheduled flights between Casablanca and Doha had to be canceled in order to make way for the historic FIFA World Cup semifinal match between Morocco and France in Qatar.

Prior to the game on Wednesday night, the airline had previously stated that it intended to run up to 30 special flights to Qatar to transport as many Moroccan soccer fans as possible.

The national carrier, however, reportedly canceled all remaining match-day flights on Wednesday morning, citing newly enforced limitations by the Qatari government, according to a Reuters report.

In addition to operating its own twin-aisle jets, Royal Air Maroc had leased aircraft from Spanish charter company Wamos Airlines. It also appears that the airline had wanted to lease aircraft from Qatar Airways.

“Following the latest restrictions imposed by the Qatari authorities, Royal Air Maroc regrets to inform customers of the cancellation of their flights operated by Qatar Airways,” the airline explained in a statement.

After defeating Portugal 1-0 on Sunday, the national football team of Morocco created history by becoming the first African nation to advance to the FIFA World Cup semifinals.

Many of the thousands of Moroccan supporters who had planned to travel to Qatar to support their team on Wednesday night will now be disappointed.
