The Airbus A380 will resume service in the summer of 2023, according to Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA), giving its superjumbos, which had been placed in deep storage, a respite.

According to the German flag carrier, decisions about how many A380s to revive and where they would fly are being made right now.

“In the summer of 2023, we not only expect to have a much more reliable air transport system worldwide. We will be welcoming you back on board our Airbus A380s, too,” said the airline’s Executive Board Members in a press statement released by Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA).

The airline claimed that the rapid increase in consumer demand and the postponed delivery of ordered aircraft prompted its decision to reinstate the A380 in its long-haul operations.

“We decided today to put the A380, which continues to enjoy great popularity, back into service at Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) in summer 2023,” the board members said in the statement.

“In addition to this, we are further strengthening and modernizing our fleets with some 50 new Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and Boeing 777-9 long-haul aircraft and more than 60 new Airbus A320/321s in the next three years alone”.

The A380 appeared to be nearing its demise when the pandemic struck, with many operators rushing to place aircraft in long-term storage. However, Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) is currently working with other airlines, including Qantas and Singapore Airlines (SIA1) (SINGY), to prevent some of the planes from being abandoned in the desert.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA), was quoted by numerous media as saying that he had to soften his position on excluding the A380 during a briefing at the IATA AGM on June 20, 2022. He had previously stated that the A380 will not return.
