A Cargojet Airways Boeing 767-300 freighter, registration C-GUAJ, was departing Narita’s runway 16R at 11:32L (02:32Z) with two crew on freight flight W8-1328 from Tokyo Narita (Japan) to Vancouver,BC (Canada) when the tail of the aircraft struck the runway surface, releasing a plume of smoke.
The plane lifted out and continued to Vancouver, where it landed around 8:15 a.m.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Transport, the ATC controller detected the tail impact, and a runway assessment revealed contact marks measuring approximately 31 meters in length, 15 centimeters in breadth, and 1-2 centimeters in depth. One of the runway centerline lights was also broken.
Assuming nothing was wrong, the crew continued to their goal. The runway was blocked for roughly 90 minutes while the light was replaced and the runway was made safe. A thorough inquiry of the incident was launched.
The plane stayed on the ground in Vancouver for almost 2.5 hours before continuing on to the next sector of W8-1328 to Chicago O’Hare, IL (USA).
