UPDATE: An Air Algerie Boeing 737-800, registration 7T-VKR, flying AH-1157 from Lyon (France) to Annaba (Algeria), was cleared for takeoff and accelerating for takeoff from Lyon’s runway 35L when the tower told the aircraft to stop immediately after detecting a snow plough entering the runway.
The crew rejected a low-speed takeoff, and the aircraft slowed and stopped on the runway before taxiing to the hold short line and departing without issue about 7 minutes later.
According to the French BEA, the airfield was operational at night and low visibility protocols were in effect. Without consulting the tower, a ground controller cleared a snow plough onto the runway.
When both controllers spotted the developing conflict, the tower instructed AH-1157 to come to stop. The crew complied, and the plane came to a stop approximately 1200 meters/4000 feet short of the snow plough.
The incident was categorized as serious and is being investigated by the BEA.
The BEA released its Final report in French only on September 7th, 2021; an English version is expected in due time.
As soon as the English version is released, the AVH will summarize it.
