Dogs are undoubtedly our guardian angels, and there are numerous stories of their heroic – lifesaving – actions. Nonetheless even an angel may require assistance. However, when this tiny puppy needed assistance, two flight attendants stepped up and saved her life!
Michele Burt, her husband Steven, and their three dogs boarded a JetBlue flight from Florida to Massachusetts, expecting it to be a typical flight because they have traveled extensively.
The Burts had the dogs in carriers under their seats, as per routine. However, shortly after takeoff, Michele discovered that one of her dogs, Darcy, a gorgeous French Bulldog, was having difficulty breathing.
Michele opened Darcy’s carrier’s door, concerned, to check on her. The woman was well aware that she was breaking the airline company’s rules, but her dog’s life was in jeopardy.
“I noticed that her tongue was blue, and I am aware that is a sign of insufficient oxygen”, the woman later explained. “I pulled her out from under the seat and placed her on my lap to cool down and help her relax as she was panicking and breathing frantically.”
Because flight attendant Renaud Spencer had no idea what was going on, she originally asked Michele to return her dog, as aviation etiquette in these cases is highly severe.
She quickly recognized, however, that it was something serious, and she raced to assist, but not before informing her colleague Diane Asher.
The two women attempted to chill Darcy down with ice packs but were unable. Renaud, who also owns a French Bulldog, came up with another plan.
But it’s one that goes against the rules. She was, nevertheless, willing to accept the danger in order to save the unfortunate dog’s life.
“She [Renaud] brought a small oxygen tank with a mask attached and offered it saying, ‘Maybe this will help,’” Michelle said. ““I believe Renaud and Diane saved a life, some may reduce the value of life because Darcy is a canine — I do not.”
Darcy’s life was saved by the two flight attendants, despite the fact that they had to break the rules. So, after they landed and Darcy had fully recovered, Michele decided to write a letter to express her gratitude to these two wonderful women.
“I wanted to express my gratitude to JetBlue and Renaud and Diane for performing an excellent job while also being wonderful people!”
When finding about the situation, the company couldn’t be prouder. They even praised the two women for their actions! “Our mission is to inspire humanity, and we’re very proud of those outstanding crew members who consistently demonstrate a passion for excellent customer service,” JetBlue wrote in a statement.
