After failing to acquire new funding, African airline Comair, which had been running British Airways and Kukula.com flights across Africa, announced the cancellation of all operations.
On May 31, 2022, news of the flight suspension broke after ticket sales for British Airways and Kukula.com flights operated by Comair were halted. Comair claimed that it ran out of money and was unable to get more funding.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience this suspension will cause our customers,” Comair chief executive Glenn Orsmond was cited in the airline’s statement. “We did everything we could to avoid it. Comair, the BRPs, and the lenders are working all out to get the funding in place so that we can resume our normal flight schedule as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile, Comair’s business rescue specialists have informed the company that the procedure to obtain the necessary funds is still on and that once completed, the airline would be able to resume flights.
“But regrettably under these circumstances, the practitioners have no choice but to voluntarily suspend all scheduled flights until the funding is confirmed,” Comair wrote.
On May 5, 2020, the South African airline, which is estimated to cover roughly 40% of the African market, entered voluntary business rescue proceedings [a type of bankruptcy protection – ed. note] in the wake of the global COVID-19 epidemic.
Comair’s fleet now comprises 12 Boeing 737 family planes that are operated as a British Airways subsidiary.
