Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flag carrier, is closing its pilot base in London, England. The decision follows the airline’s evaluation of the British base in July 2021.

“After an intense consultation phase, Cathay Pacific has informed the concerned pilots of its decision to close the pilot base in London,” Cathay Pacific told AeroTime News on September 10, 2021.

The decision to close the London pilot base was not made lightly, and it “does not reflect on the professionalism of the pilots,” Cathay Pacific told Reuters on September 9, 2021.

Pilots based in London will have the option of relocating to Hong Kong or being granted redundancy.

The British base is the latest to close, following the closure of four previous foreign bases. Cathay Pacific will close its pilot base in Canada in April 2021.

Closures were also announced in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany. Cathay Pacific is still examining its pilot bases in North America.

Cathay Pacific carried a total of 54,092 passengers in July 2021, a 25% increase over July 2020 but a 98 percent decrease from the pre-pandemic level in July 2019.

Cathay Pacific, which does not have a domestic market, has incurred significant losses as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, which caused international air travel demand to drop. In 2020, Cathay Pacific had already laid off 5,900 people.

According to Planespotters.net, 84 of its 178 planes are now parked.
