According to Turkey’s official news agency, a firefighting plane crashed near Kahramanmaras, southern Turkey.

According to Turkish official media, a firefighting jet chartered from Russia crashed Saturday in a hilly area of southern Turkey.

UPDATE The crash killed five Russian and three Turkish soldiers.
UPDATE Search and rescue crews were sent to the scene.
According to the Anadolu news agency, the jet was associated with the General Directorate of Forestry. Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the Kahramanmaras area.

Wildfires erupted in Turkey’s Mediterranean area in late July, destroying thousands of acres of forest, especially in the seaside districts of Mugla and Antalya. Bekir Pakdemirli, Turkey’s forestry minister, said Thursday that firefighters, helicopters, and planes have put out 299 fires in 16 days.
