American Airlines is scheduled to receive the first of these new deliveries as soon as today, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has announced it anticipates Boeing to resume delivery of its 787 Dreamliner this week (Wednesday). After April 2021, this will be the first Dreamliner delivery.
After finishing the inspection and refit modifications that were necessary to meet certification standards, Boeing received the FAA’s clearance.
The Dreamliner’s airworthiness certification procedures and engagement by Boeing had come under intense criticism, and the FAA started looking into some production issues in the aircraft in 2020.
In a July earnings call, American Airlines stated that it expects to receive nine 787s in 2022, including two just this month. With the exception of the Dreamliner expected for delivery this week, it now has 42 Dreamliners on order.
Boeing said it continues “to work transparently with the FAA and our customers towards resuming 787 deliveries.”
In July, the FAA approved Boeing’s plan for specific inspections to verify the airplane meets requirements and that all retrofit work has been completed.
Boeing has approximately 120 787s awaiting delivery and the FAA has made it clear that it “will inspect each aircraft before an airworthiness certificate is issued and cleared for delivery.”
