At 12:57L (10:57Z), an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350-900, registration ET-AYB, on flight ET-809 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Johannesburg, South Africa, touched down hard on runway 03R in Johannesburg, rejected landing, and climbed out around 10 degrees off the runway heading.
The plane climbed to 8000 feet MSL, then positioned for an approach to runway 03L, where it landed safely about 20 minutes later.
The plane is still on the ground 12 days later in Johannesburg.
According to a local source, the plane had a hard landing and a runway excursion before going around.
According to ADS-B data transmitted by the aircraft was descending at 500+ fpm at the time of touchdown, touched down about 120 meters/400 feet past the runway threshold (past the runway numbers but before the first touch down zone marker), changed 12 degrees to the right and climbed through 400 feet AGL about 460 meters/1500 feet to the right of the runway centerline overflying the hangars east of the runway.

Images of the damage and current repairs (see below) on November 18th, 2021, confirm that the aircraft had also been damaged by a wingtip strike.
The aircraft experienced a severe crosswind when landing on runway 03R, and the right-hand wing tip made contact with the runway surface, according to the South African Civil Aviation Authority. The incident was classified as an accident, and it is currently being investigated.
Ethiopian Airlines has yet to react to The Aviation Herald’s inquiry, which was sent on November 9th, 2021.
